$40 PER PERSON ($35 KHM MEMBERS)

*Price includes meal

We will visit two historic early 1900s homes situated close together on Crystal Springs Drive. The Furuya House was the summer retreat of Masijiro Furuya a successful Seattle businessman. The home is the best-preserved early Asian-American residence in the Pacific Northwest. Because Mr. Furuya was Japanese. he was not allowed to own property, so he leased this property from his neighbor, Colonel Warren Gazzam. The Colonel, a colorful entrepreneur whose business ventures included a Mosquito Fleet line and a Bremerton hotel.  At one time  he owned over 500 acres on Bainbridge Island, including Gazzam Lake, and intended to develop the southwest shoreline as the “gold coast” of the island. His 6000 square foot house, build with river rock from the shore, has been lovingly researched and cared for by its current owners, artist Kathe Fraga and her husband Jeff. You won’t want to miss this fascinating destination and hear the stories it tells. We’ll follow up with lunch at the nearby Treehouse Cafe.

Old town Silverdale

Saturday, September 23rd

12:00 pm

$40 per person ($35 KHM Members)

*Price includes meal

Before there was the Silverdale Mall, and before there was Costco, or Target or Ross, Silverdale was a bustling community along the shores of Dyes Inlet. The town was plotted in 1888 and was originally called Goldendale, but turns out that name was already in use, so they went with the next metal down and renamed it Silverdale. Loggers & farmers founded Old Town Silverdale in 1854 & was the center of commercial trade in the 1900s. Silverdale boasted a top notch hotel, the areas first jitney as well as some of the first Co-ops in the Northwest for farmers, the egg and poultry association and cheese. The school was so crowded in 1911 they had to jack it up in the air and build another floor underneath it. The Kitsap History Museum was located in the old Silverdale bank building from 1976 until 1995 when we moved to our current location in Bremerton. We’ll begin with lunch at the Hub and since so much of Silverdale’s vast history is no longer visible, we’ll also have a presentation before our embarking on our historic walking tour through Old Town Silverdale.

Manette’s Early Days

Saturday, October 21

11:00 AM

$40 Per Person ($35 KHM Members)

*Price Includes Meal

Join us for an afternoon walking a short loop full of colorful history in Manette. William Renton moved his sawmill from Alki across Puget Sound to Enetai (Chinook for “on the other side”) on the Kitsap Peninsula in 1854. A thriving town with the first school in Kitsap and other “firsts” grew up around the mill site. The name was later changed briefly to “Decatur” and then to “Manette”, after one of the many boats that delivered goods and passengers before the bridge across to Bremerton was built in 1930. Following our tour, we’ll have a light meal in downtown Manette.
